Hurricane season is officially underway in Hawaiʻi. While storms do not impact the islands every year, preparation is one of the best ways to protect the people we love most—especially our kūpuna.
Older adults often face unique challenges during emergencies. Limited mobility, medical conditions, and dependence on medications or medical equipment can make even a short-term disruption difficult.
Start with a Basic Emergency Plan
Every family should have a plan that answers these questions:
- Who will check on your loved one during a storm?
- Where will they go if evacuation becomes necessary?
- How will they communicate if phone service is disrupted?
- Does everyone know emergency contact information?
Having these conversations before a storm is far easier than trying to make decisions during an emergency.
Build a Two-Week Supply Kit
Emergency management officials recommend having at least 14 days of supplies available.
Include:
- Water
- Shelf-stable foods
- Prescription medications
- Flashlights
- Batteries
- First aid supplies
- Important documents
- Comfort items
Remember to include eyeglasses, hearing aids, dentures, walkers, canes, and extra medical supplies.
Don’t Wait Until a Storm Is Named
The best time to prepare is before a hurricane is approaching Hawaiʻi. Store supplies now and review your emergency plan with family members.
Preparedness is one of the greatest gifts we can give our kūpuna.
At Wilson Homecare, we encourage families to have conversations today so they can face tomorrow’s challenges with confidence.
